Nanchi’s Fun Facts Friday – Durga Temple, Aihole!

India is the land of rich culture and heritage. Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world and the evidence of it can be found in many parts of the world. The level of intelligence, the vision, the workmanship and the creativity our ancestors had is unmatched. The architecture and art of that time with limited resources can’t be replicated even today! Haa…my heart is filled with so much pride.

This is related to Nanchi’s Fun Facts Friday. Today, you will be getting to know the facts about the Durga Temple Aihole in Karnataka. When we were on our trip to Hampi, I read about Aihole temples and had to pay it a visit. Trust me we were not disappointed! Let’s start with the fun facts…..

  • Built by the Chalukyas in the 7th-8th century.
  • Architecture style of the Durga temple is mostly Darvida with Nagara style.
  • The temple is not of the goddess “Durga” but probably gets its name from the “Durga” (fort) nearby.
  • The original dedication of the temple may be of Sun or Lord Vishnu or perhaps Lord Shiva.
  • The outer round ended structure seems to be resembling the Indian Parliament House.
  • The exterior walls are extremely intricately carved with the figures of Varaha, Narasimha, Vishnu and more. 
  • Pierced windows with beautiful patterns allow light into the hall.

  13. Wow.. Another amazing post from you, Madam..!!
    I knew about the fact that the Parliament building is inspired from the Durga Temple, but didn’t know that this temple is actually dedicated to Lord Shiva. A closer examination of the structure (which resembles a gigantic Shivling) cements that theory.
