Today we bring you the very picturesque destination from the Golden City – Jaisalmer in Rajasthan state. We are talking about the landmark of Jaisalmer – The Gadisar Lake. The best time to visit Jaisalmer is from October – February.

Here are the fun facts about the Gadisar Lake, Jaisalmer….

  • Gadisar Lake is the artificial lake built around 1400 AD by the first ruler of Jaisalmer, Raja Rawal Jaisal.
  • Later it was revamped by the Maharaja Garisisar Singh.
  • Gadisar Lake was built as a water conservation reservoir.
  • The entrance to the lake is a magnificent and intricately carved yellow stone archway – Tilon ki Pol.
  • The lake is surrounded by many temples, and intricately carved chhatris.
  • Gadisar Lake was the only source of water for the residents of Jaisalmer in those old days.
  • A perfect place to click the golden Jaisalmer Fort during sunrise and also for bird-watching.
  • You can enjoy the evenings with the boat ride.

    1. Gadisar Lake is quite popular and serene. I loved it during the evenings. I am glad you liked the facts. We didn’t go inside the Killa but just clicked it. Next time I have plans to stay inside the fort…:D

        We went inside the Fort for sure, but didn’t stay inside.. Do they allow that? I am not so sure.

      4. A small trivia on Sonar Kella. I don’t know the actual name of the Fort, but Sonar Kella in Bengali means Golden Fort. The nomenclature is quite evident when it shines like gold in the desert. Sonar Kella is a film based on Detective Feluda, shot in this Fort itself, by none other than Oscar Winning Film producer / director Satyajit Ray. The Fort gets this name from the movie.. 🙂

  7. Great post – Jaisalmer was already on my list and I’d even considered cycling there back in December before I got (happily) sidetracked and spent the week I would’ve cycled there in a village instead.

    I’ll definitely get there someday, though. Rajasthan will always have a special place in my heart. I may go different places on various trips to India but I always stop in Rajasthan no matter what.
