Thoseghar Waterfalls – A monsoon getaway!

July is nearing to end and usually by this time the rains have done their magic. You can see lush green landscape, overcast sky with vivid colorful evenings. This year it is different, with little or no rains, the landscape is a bit dry. Post rains, nature lovers, travelers like us used to flock to many scenic destinations around.

Since, we can’t travel or rather even drive to the nearby places this year, let me take you to the throwback bike trips we did back in 2009 and 2015 to the very beautiful and stunning waterfall – Thoseghar Waterfalls in Satara, Maharashtra. A lot has changed since then.

Distance from Satara City: 20 Kms   
Pune: 130 Kms                     
Mumbai: 290 Kms

Best time to visit: July-November, August being the peak season.

Thoseghar Waterfall is a series of cascades with some tiny and large picturesque waterfalls with the height ranging from 15 meters to 500 meters. It is a perfect monsoon destination for picnic or hiking. One can go along with family or friends.

August 2009:: We started off on our bike to the much loved and not then much popular Thoseghar Waterfall. With one camera bag and a small tiffin of snacks, we started the road trip. Some parts of the road were rugged and some smooth. The ghats, the less-crowded roads, drizzle and the lush green mountains on the way made the drive memorable. We stopped for a couple of times to admire the beauty of nature. The flora and fauna post monsoon are spectacular. 

Reached after a beautiful drive of 2 hours. There were no parking lots, no eating areas, no entrance, no guards and no sign boards. How good was that! Felt like walking through a jungle and discovering a roaring waterfall. Though we reached tired but the majestic view made us forget everything.

The way to Thoseghar falls was from through the dense forest trail. Just so serene. You would not imagine such a pretty waterfall after a tiring walk. At that time, the sound of falls could be heard from a decent distance. Recently a railing has been made for safety purposes. As the place is getting popular, a parking space, proper entry gate has also been set up. After the hike, a platform area or rather waterfall viewpoint is there from where you can view the twin falls at the Thoseghar waterfall and take some photographs as well.

The deep gorge and the river stream takes the breath away. Jungle monkeys are there to give you company. They are nothing to be afraid of. You can walk around by the trails and spend a good 2-3 hours. Carry your own food and water to avoid inconvenience.

You can also include Chalkewadi Windmills, Ajinkyatara Fort , Kaas Lake.
Thoseghar Waterfall is a perfect monsoon destination for a fun filled weekend with family and friends.

  3. Really really beautiful. All of my trips to India have been in the winter and while it can be a relief to put the -20 degree weather behind me, clearly I need to visit at this time of year.

    Those photos make me think that my next big bicycle trip needs to include Maharashtra at this time of year. It’s a beautiful state even in the dry season so this would be incredible. Something to plan for post-pandemic for sure.

    1. Thank you so much, Todd. Winters are the ideal time to visit India. But some places of South India are heavenly post monsoon i.e around September-October. With the season fluctuations nothing can be predicted. As this year, there is less or almost no rains here, which is really sad.

      Hopefully, when you visit India, you might get this experience. Yes, there are so many trekking, hiking, photography and bicycling groups here in Pune. You can join and surely you will have the best of your time. Sahaydaris (Mountain range of Western Ghats) are one of the best places for cycling. 😀

      Otherwise the dry season is unbearable. I would suggest you to visit in around August end – September. You must plan this side of the India.

      1. Definitely. My favourite times were around Diwali and just before Holi. Warm but not too warm. I need to explore Maharashtra more also. Maybe instead of taking the train from Mumbai to Ratnagiri my son and I can bike this time. Our visit to the area near Ganpatipule was one of the highlights of our trip in 2018.

    Beautiful landscape photographs Nanchi (as always 💚).

    These getaways around Mumbai & Pune are good fun. I love reading about them & seeing photos of monsoon from there. The sound and sight of waterfalls is calming. The wildflowers are a bonus …… the flower you shared is so interesting and pretty.

  24. Nanchi, your photos of the spectacular waterfalls bring back wonderful memories of my hiking days! When I lived in Virginia, I used to hike to the many waterfalls in Shenandoah National Park. Waterfalls will always be one of my favorite things in nature! All the best! Cheryl
