Nanchi’s Fun Facts Friday – Hazara Rama Temple, Hampi!

Another week….Another Nanchi’s Fun Facts Friday. This time I am writing about one of my favourite UNESCO World Heritage Sites – Hampi. It is not only photographer’s paradise but also Historian’s treasury. This post will be about one of the sites in Hampi i.e The Hazara Rama Temple.

So, here are the fun facts about the temple….

  • The Hazara Rama (Thousand Rama) depicts the reigning deity of the temple – Rama.
  • The walls, relics and panels of the temple carry more than thousand stories of Ramayana including Luv-Kush, Bal Krishna and Bhagvata.  
  • Built in the 15th century, Hazara Rama is the remarkable example of Dravida Vimana type of temple.
  • Hazara Rama temple was the private temple of the Royal Family of then Vijayanagar empire. 
  • The temple opening has flat roofed Dvarmandapa with symmetrical pillars and after crossing the doorway one enters Rangamandapa with blackstone tall pillars.
  • The relics on the outer walls depict the procession of horses, elephants, soldiers, women in the Dusshera rally.
  • The ruined temple is known for intricate carvings and inscriptions.  
  • The only temple located in the Royal Zone between Residential and Ceremonial enclosures.

  3. Hampi is a magnificent site and a place which is so worthy of being showcased as a major cultural site of India.
    Unfortunately, for a solo traveler like me who doesn’t want to waste time journeying, reaching Hampi is still a pain, which requires more money, time, planning than possibly a weekend trip to Dubai.
    Loved this article of yours. Hampi has a plethora of architectural marvels and each one of them is worth visiting and exploring.. 🙂 The finesse of the sculptures and stone carvings is simply unmatched.

    1. Absolutely, Hampi is a wonderful site for travellers. You can travel by train from Mumbai to Hospet and then take any cab or auto till Hampi. There are many pocket friendly stays as well. 😊

    1. Hampi is a wonderful place. No wonder it is UNESCO World Heritage Site. You need atleast 4-5 days to experience its beauty. You should definitely plan Hampi. Where are you based, BTW?

  13. Beautiful place and great article! Must be a wonderful destination.
    One particular line confuses me though: In the first point you say that it depicts Lord Ram and his avatar Vishnu. Shouldn’t it be the other way round?
